When it comes to moving house, your garage is one area that often proves to be a challenge. Packed with tools, equipment, and miscellaneous items, the garage requires careful planning and organisation to ensure a smooth and efficient move. There could be hazardous materials and heavy items to deal with, so it’s important to plan accordingly.
1. Sort Out The Old Items
Begin by sorting through the items in your garage. Categorise them into groups such as tools, sports equipment such as old bikes, and any old or rusty gardening supplies. Take this opportunity to declutter and get rid of items that are past their best. You can either donate the items to friends and family, sell the items on Facebook Marketplace, place them in our Irvine storage facility until you find a buyer or have moved in, or simply put them in the bin if they are going to be more hassle than they're worth.
2. Create an Inventory
Garages can be full of miscellaneous items that you still might use. Creating an inventory will help you keep track of your garage items during the move to ensure that nothing gets lost. It’s unlikely that you’ll remember if one small tool were to go missing as you won’t use the items very often. Create a detailed list of the contents of each box, and label each box appropriately so you can identify the items when you move into your new home.
3. Prepare The Large & Heavy Items
If you have bulky items like workbenches or shelving units, disassemble them to make packing and transportation easier. However, keep the smaller items such as the screws, and small parts for these units in labelled bags. Then, tape them securely to the corresponding item or place them in a clearly labelled box.
4. Safely Pack The Sharp Tools
When it comes to packing dangerous tools such as saws and hammers, take extra care to ensure you are dealing with these items safely. Carefully gather sharp tools and attachments and wrap them with padding to prevent them from either hurting yourself or damaging items they are packed with during transit. Place smaller hand tools in a toolbox or wrap them together with bubble wrap or packing paper.
Some items such as hammers can certainly add up in weight, so it’s also important to ensure that you don’t pack boxes too full as you could sustain an injury if these are not lifted properly.
5. Consider Hazardous Materials
Your garage may have hazardous chemicals such as bleach and other cleaning products that if not disposed of properly could be a health hazard or cause damage to other items they come into contact with. Do some research on the best way to dispose of the specific chemicals you have. Avoid packing flammable, explosive, or toxic substances together or in a way that could cause them to burst.
